Shaving head benefits and addressing Bald Dandruff

Shaving head to get rid of dandruff

Dandruff is a skin condition that plagues many people. If you are embarrassed of those white little flakes with a full head of hair, you might be wondering if shaving your head will help reduce or completely eliminate dandruff.  Is there really such a thing as Bald Dandruff

There is good and bad news for you.

Dandruff Causes

Dandruff is NOT caused by hair, but a skin or more accurately a scalp condition. Let’s go a bit deeper into what causes dandruff in the first place to see how having hair vs a bald head impacts it one way or the other.

Dandruff is caused by dead skin cells. When you have a full head of hair the dead skin cells collect at the base of your hair and when combined with the oils from your scalp (aka sebum) you have an environment ideal for fungal growth and in turn causing the itching commonly associated with dandruff.

When you itch your scalp or when your hair just naturally moves it frees those skin cells that typically end up on your shoulders.

There is only one way to get to and solve the root cause of dandruff and prevent it, which is to treat with anti-fungal products.

Ok, now on to the good news.

Bald Dandruff

Shaving your head, especially with a razor can help control your dandruff problem. I’m not a dermatologist, but I do speak from personal experience. Here is how I believe shaving your head bald can help getting rid of dandruff.

When you shave your head with a razor two things happen.

1.) You slice the base of the hair extremely close or level to the scalp. This eliminates the one thing those white little flakes like sticking to.
2.) Shaving also exfoliates by scraping away a very thin layer of skin, typically the dead cells sitting on top of your scalp.

If you don’t have hair for the flakes to stick to and you remove a large majority of dead cells by shaving, you are essentially removing the environment for fungus to develop and your dandruff is no more.

I had dandruff with hair and now with a bald head it’s gone. Now I didn’t shave my head just to get rid of dandruff, but rather deal with my receding hair line. The dandruff removal was a very nice benefit.

Do I have Dandruff or Dry Scalp?

Some people confuse dry skin or dry scalp with dandruff and they are not the same.  If you shaved your head and still have dry scalp try shaving with oil.  Read How to shave your head in this article where we mention the shaving oil.  This helps moisturize the skin.  For really dry skin shave with oil and moisturize your scalp with oil, cream, or balm.

If you are looking for a dandruff solution shaving your head bald might be right for you and you also might have different results. Seek advice from a dermatologist for proper diagnosis.
