Sharing email
I get quite a bit of email from people who visit HeadShaver.org, and I often get a number of interesting suggestions about shaving from them. Some of that information is integrated into the regular articles on the site, but occasionally I get stuff that I can't fit in somewhere else, so I thought I'd share it here.
This batch of email includes some suggestions for razor bumps, a better shine, and closer shaving.

Shaving in the shower
One of the keys to a good wet shave is, naturally enough, water. Water penetrates the hair, causing it to expand; this makes the hair softer and easier to cut. Softer hair reduces the damage done to your blade (which means it'll last a bit longer), it's less likely to tear or get cut off at an angle (which reduces the likelihood of razor bumps), and may also reduce the amount of irritation you suffer due to shaving.
There are
several ways to wet your hair before shaving. A great way to ensure maximum wetness is to shave while in the shower.

Shaving the back of the head
One of the more difficult areas to shave, especially when you're first shaving your head, is the part of it you can't see: the back of your skull.
For most every other part of your noggin, it's relatively easy to see what you're doing. But once you get to the back, a single mirror isn't enough to get a decent view. Unless you're fortunate enough to have 2 mirrors properly set up, you can't see what's going on back there.
What's a shaver supposed to do?

Different strokes
A gentleman emailed me a while back complaining about the Gillette Mach 3 razor. He had tried it, and was not happy at all with the results. The blades didn't stay sharp long enough, it was overpriced, and the shave was no closer than he got with other razors. In fact, he stated that he got better results with a single-blade disposable razor than with the Mach 3.
If you've read my
review of the Mach 3, you know that I'm a big fan (it's my personal favorite) and I consider them the best razor you can buy. And based on the feedback I get from visitors to this site, many people agree with this assessment. So why does this gentleman (and presumably others) get such a greatly different result?

Religious positions on headshaving
A gentleman recently added a comment to my guestbook wherein he described this site (and headshaving in general) as silly. He concluded his comment by saying "If GOD had intended us to be EGGHEADS he wouldn`t have made men with hair ???"
My instinctual response to a statement like that is to wonder if an all-powerful deity would worry about hairstyles at all. It seems like a relatively minor issue in the overall scheme of things, right? It turns out, though, that God does have an opinion, according to several popular religions, but what God's opinion might be varies according to which tradition you follow.

Advice for people with acne and razor bumps
Many head-shavers experience razor bumps and other hair- and skin-related problems. It can be difficult to find a way to shave comfortably.
Mark Stelmach experienced both acne and razor bumps when he shaved his head. Either on their own is bad enough; in combination it's even worse. He was kind enough to share his advice with us here.

The Masai (Maasai)
The
Masai are an African tribe whose name is well-known to the Western world. They have resisted changing their way of life, and continue to live their traditional lifestyle as they have for centuries.
Head-shaving is an important part of several different aspects of Masai life. The following links each describe various aspects of head-shaving in Masai culture, and provide other information about these interesting people.
